Therapy for Religious Trauma

Most of us search for meaning and purpose in life, and many find answers in spirituality. Perhaps you grew up in a certain religion and have never known anything different. Or maybe you recently joined a congregation in search of answers and connection. Things may go well for a while, but then you start to sense a shift. The grace and openness you first encountered is replaced by strict rules and harsh consequences. You may even feel confused about your own beliefs due to the pressure to conform. Those in authority may have abused their power, coercing you into behavior you normally would never engage in. You may even begin to worry about being shunned from the congregation, or worse yet, that your sin is too great and that God is unhappy with you.

Some common symptoms of religious trauma include:

  • Negative beliefs about yourself, others, or the world

  • Difficultly making decisions

  • Feeling isolated from others

  • Confusion about what your beliefs are

  • Paranoia

  • Depression and anxiety

  • Difficultly managing your emotions
